Quality

THE QUALITY CONTROL IS DIVIDED INTO 3 STAGES: INSPECTION OF THE PLANTATION, EXAMINATION OF THE SOWING MATERIAL IN AN ACCREDITED SEED LABORATORY AND EVALUATION OF THE VARIETIES GROWN ON EXPERIMENTAL PLOTS

Quality control process:

THE FIRST STAGE

Quality control consists in the inspection of seed plantations, both in the country and abroad. It takes place several times during the year when the plants blossom or fructify. We examine properties such as seed spacing (very important in the production of vegetable seeds since it guarantees purity of the variety) and the balance of morphological attributes. For ornamental plants, the inspection includes, among others, color of the flowers, habit of the plants and their height. If any plants differ from the specified attributes typical for the variety we have sown, they are immediately removed from the plantation.

THE SECOND STAGE

Quality control is the laboratory examination of each seed batch in optimal conditions for the given variety, as determined by international standards. Our lab conducts about 30,000 quality analyses of seeds each year. It’s the largest laboratory of this kind in Poland. There are temperature-controlled rooms, both with constant and variable temperature, sprouting racks, adjustable from - 5°C to 35°C and capable of being permanently or periodically illuminated, the Jacobsen’s germination apparatus with adjustable temperature and lighting as well as the room in which a stable temperature of 15°C is maintained. If necessary, following the lab analysis, each batch of seeds undergoes a complex technological processing, which includes purification, drying and cleaning. Once inspected for the second time, the purified seed batches, well-balanced in terms of moisture content, purity and germination capacity thanks to the earlier treatment, are sent to be sold and packaged up.

THE THIRD STAGE

Quality control is performed on experimental plots. Each year, we set up more than 12,000 plots to examine all seed batches purchased from the producers and other suppliers as well as those sold to consumers in previous seasons. First, we judge the germination rate. Seeds from each batch are sown on pallets in greenhouses to enable us to evaluate their germination capacity. Then, young plants are planted out on plots. When the plants blossom or fructify, we systematically evaluate their variety identity.
